Wayfinding project design competition - Culture and heritage.

In 2019 Harlesden Neighbourhood Forum started what was planned to be a 3-year programme to introduce wayfinding banners, as part of our work to ensure that local planning authorities recognise the importance of maintaining the ‘gateways’ into Harlesden and ensuring that footfall was directed into Harlesden town centre through the course of the Old Oak and Park Royal developments.

Continuing on the Wayfinding and art installation tradition, this is a project where diverse, young and old residents can create the content for banners for the lamp posts that highlight Harlesden’s gateways and define Harlesden‘s boundaries. This activity sits within the overarching Heritage Action Zone project and creates opportunities for all the diverse groups of the Harlesden community.

The design program consists of the following activities:

•An engagement program for different groups looking at their past, present and future heritage and culture in Harlesden.

•For each group we will coordinate a workshop, a local walkabout, a talk from an artist/designer and share archived pictures of Harlesden.

•To inspire people to design a poster reflecting Harlesden’s culture, people and longstanding heritage and create ownership for how we can create a better Harlesden now and in the future.

Harlesden was recorded in 1057 and many changes have come to Harlesden since. Quiet village life changed with the industrial revolution, which brought the Irish workers to build the railroads and later the African Caribbeans, South Asian, Brazilian and now Somali and Romanian and many other cultures are bringing their flavours to Harlesden.

What does the future hold?

What are the traditions that your culture had to preserve the planet, and how can we use those in Harlesden today and in the future?
