Find a local building for Islamia Primary School

J. Guled•4 years ago There are about 20 faith schools in Brent.10 are Roman Catholic5 Church of England3 Jewish1 Muslim.Over 16% of Brent residents identify as Muslims. Yet the only state funded Muslim school in the whole borough is left with 2 choices.A) Either move to a site which is:6 miles aways.A former mainstream school catering for all communities forcibly shut down by the council a year ago. ( Community Tension guaranteed)Is served by a tube station with no lifts. No parking availableNo direct bus routes.🔵This means:-Families on low income will be priced out of their own school. Unable to afford the journey.-Families with SEND will be unable to follow due to disabilities.-Working parents will struggle with getting children into school and then going to work.🔵For those who will decide to follow this will mean:-Children's safety will be impacted when they have to access busy train stations daily. Islamia has many large households, child adult ratio will be compromised when parents have to use trains with 3 or more children. Who will bear the responsibility?-Children's attainment and wellbeing will be impacted when relying daily on tubes to receive compulsory education will mean lateness ( due to delays) and absences ( due to strikes).B) Or shut down. This is in no way a consultation, as current parents have no viable options. Also many vulnerable families will be left behind which could be grounds to make a discrimination challenge.SOLUTION ✅Islamia is an oversubscribed and popular school at risk of shutting down. It is the hardest primary school to get into in Brent. The council should rehouse the children in the new building being built as part of South Kilburn's regeneration. Carlton Vale and Kilburn Park have struggled with numbers for years and cannot fill a 2FE school. Combined they only have 147 pupils. Those children can join neighbouring schools or Islamia if they follow the Muslim faith.Brent could also look at other buildings in the area. For instance Kilburn's Police station has been closed to the public for years. Kilburn's former Jobcentre has been empty for the past 4 years sold to third party and left empty and rundown.Muslim children are Brent constituents too.

This proposal is unfair and unacceptable

J. Guled•4 years ago This proposal is unfair on:❗The Muslim community as the only Muslim faith school in the borough cannot get a suitable, local and permanent building. Islamia has a right to exist and thrive.❗Unfair on children at Islamia who will have to spend hours stuck in traffic or near dangerous tube platforms. This will be a disaster for safety, attendance, punctuality wellbeing and attainment.❗Unfair on parents who will have to choose between keeping their jobs or taking their children to a far away school to keep in line with their faith.❗Unfair on South Kenton residents who are already struggling with illegal parking, congestion, pollution and delays. They have the right to get on with their lives and not be constantly stuck in their area due to traffic and obstructions . This will make a bad situation worse.❗Bad for community cohesion as people will be at each others' throats. Parents need to get their kids to school and residents need to be able to come and go. It will be hard for both. Surely councils should not facilitate hostile situations and altercations.❗Unfair on disadvantaged families whom cannot afford the journey and will be priced out of their school ( we are in the midst of a cost of living crisis!)❗Unfair on disabled children who will sadly be left behind.❗Unfair on the environment. Councils should plan for the children already enrolled and find buildings that will minimise cars and pollution. They clearly are getting it wrong here. Finally this is unacceptable because Brent Council knew the school was on a split site and urgently needed a permanent solution for over a decade. All other schools and faith schools have adequate buildings. Many currently not making the most of them as they struggle with numbers. Islamia is oversubscribed, popular and the hardest school to get into in Brent. But it does not matter it appears. Please follow @DCustodians on twitter to help raise awareness and support Islamia's children in finally securing a new building in the local area. They are Brent residents too.
