Chapter Road - Public Realm Improvements

Following the improvement of the Chapter Road Underpass in 2020, the Council and the community have identified the potential for additional landscaping improvements within the area of hardstanding located in between the Chapter Road underpass and Chapter Road itself, known as the Chapter Road former car park.

The area identified for potential improvement seems poorly designed, maintained and underutilised, lacking sufficient lighting which contributes to a poor perception of the environment.

The project will start with the engagement of the local neighbourhood and community groups to better understand views of the existing space, and options for co-design for public realm improvements within the Chapter Road (former car park) area.

Detailed design and delivery of any improvements, will be subject to securing funding confirmation and workable, sustainable design & management solutions.

With an improved public realm, the objective would be for increased ownership and surveillance of the area, which could help tackle some of the issues discussed with the Willesden Green Resident’s association group which include street drinking, fly tipping, and drug dealing.

The place looks dirty and uncared. Littering and fly-tipping are key issues of the area. We need more cleaning, lighting and surveillance to potentially reduce the overall feeling of unsafety.

People said they want a safer, greener and well-lit public space!

There is also some work that could be done on the opposite side of the tunnel, which we will be looking as part of a future commission.

We are keen to support the delivery of a place which is cleaner, safer, greener, more accessible, interactive, useful and meaningful. To do that, we want to hear from you how you think we could make this happen.

This could be teaching gardening skills or some other outdoor activity. What do you think of this idea? •What sort of food you think we could grow? •Do you think just having low maintenance plants would be better to maintain? Planters are a low maintenance solution and don’t require frequent care. Please share your ideas of what sort of green you would like to see in place! Shadi A5 years ago Insect friendly trees, shrubs and other planting that are hardy and easy to maintain, would be important to a successful and sustainable garden in this area. Community support is essential but help from the Council is also needed to maintain this space for example when considering the practicalities such as access to a water supply. Replacing concrete and other hard surfaces with permeable, more environmentally friendly surfaces should aim to reduce surface water runoff that can lead to flooding. Furthermore, lighter colour materials could help to brighten & lighten these otherwise dark surfaces. A litter bin might encourage pedestrians to dispose of their waste rather than litter pavements. Additional security in the shape of new CCTV cameras would not only help to combat Flytipping, drug dealing and other criminal activity, but safeguard against vandalism and other antisocial behaviour that are rife in this area.

Ben Reizenstein5 years ago Create a lovely and peaceful seating area by mixing raised planters with nice wooden benches. I often see people sitting on the side of the palm tree planter, so let’s make it easy, comfortable and safe for them to do that. Let’s also make sure it’s really easy to keep clean, and really difficult to dump bulky waste in. Too many sofas and suitcases of junk!the planters can be a mix of shrubs - with good smells to create more sensory enjoyment - and small trees whose leaves can make shade and mask the train sounds.let’s not create a high maintenance space that will depend on a few motivated souls never leaving the area or going on holiday! We need somewhere parents can rest after the school run, where elders can take a load off, where young folks can meet up away from the traffic and without spending money, and where you can meet your neighbours and say hello!
