Church Road Street Market

Church End is changing for the better. After been hit hard by the pandemic, we are working to revitalise Church Road for the local community and local businesses. With many of us working more from home and spending more time in our neighbourhoods, our town centres and high streets are more important than ever!

As a result of all consultation and engagement activities undertaken with the community throughout the year of 2021 and as part of the Church End Masterplan or supplementary planning document development, we now have a number of exciting projects planned for the area that aim to ensure Church Road is a vibrant, accessible and successful high street.

What changes are coming?

• Highways and public realm improvements: Following the consultation in October 2021 at the Church End Outdoor Market, 88% of respondents approved the proposal to redo the pavement as well as add greening and better pavement in Church Road. Works are due to start by February 2022 and last until July 2022.
• New Council Homes and Market Square: The Council will be building 99 homes as well as a new market square which will give a real uplift in the area. Works are planned to start in March 2022 and will last for approximately four years. 

While the construction is taking place, the market, which currently happens in the car park, will need to move.

Our proposal- A street market: We want to ensure the outdoor market remains local within Church Road. It is a key asset in the community, adding to the local economy and increasing Church Road’s activity and offer. So we are exploring opportunities for a street market to take place in Church Road. This would involve potentially redirecting buses to the High Road on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 6am-6pm, whilst the market takes place.
