Wembley Park Drive Junctions Improvements

The junction is located in a predominantly residential area in close proximity to Wembley Stadium and the attractions of Wembley Park. Preston Manor School is a short walk away. There are currently no signalised pedestrian facilities, which makes crossing at the junction difficult for all pedestrians but particularly for those with mobility difficulties.

Over the three-year period from January 2017 to August 2020 there were eight collisions resulting in nine personal injury accidents at this junction. Out of these, eight of the injuries were recorded as slight and one as serious. Six of the collisions involved cars, one involved a pedestrian, one involved a cyclist and one involved a powered two-wheel vehicle. A fatal pedestrian accident also occurred in January 2017.

We wrote to some residents in May to consult on proposals for improvements at the junction of Wembley Park Drive/Wembley Hill Road/Park Lane and Clarendon Gardens. We have listened to the comments received including concerns raised regarding banning left turn movements from Wembley Hill Road and the potential impact of this on traffic flow in the local area especially on Event Days. In response to these concerns, we have reviewed the proposed design and made amendments where possible.

The amended design now allows for the retention of the left-turning traffic movement from the Wembley Hill Road into Park Lane. Due to the layout of the junction, the proposed banned left turn from Wembley Hill Road into Wembley Park Drive is still required to accommodate the new signalised pedestrian crossings, improve road safety and reduce peak-time congestion. We have however been able to accommodate an exemption for cyclists to still make this movement.
